Weighted blankets, lap pads and shoulder wraparounds provide deep pressure and controlled weight distribution to children and adults with sensory integration dysfunction associated with ASD, ADHD, ADD, Aspergers Syndrome and insomnia related conditions. They work on a principle of providing proprioceptive input and can be incorporated into your daily sensory diet.
A lap pad can be useful at mealtimes, the weight can be grounding, reducing fidgeting and aiding sitting still, similarly they can be used at school, whilst travelling and at social events. Children with a poor proprioceptive sense often experience great difficulty. Occupational therapists have likened this to a feeling of floating in mid air. A large weighted blanket can aid a restful nights sleep as the weight provides the necessary feedback for the brain to know where the body is in relation to the bed. Hence a more "secure feeling" and a calmer state of mind. The principle is much the same as swaddling a baby to help comfort and aid sleep. Shoulder wraparounds can help to calm children who display anxiety and stress related to poor proprioception. The weight applied to the shoulders provides similar sensory input to that of a deep shoulder massage.
